Microsoft security researchers just disclosed a troubling trend: legitimate businesses are embedding hidden instructions in website buttons that permanently alter how your AI assistant makes recommendations. They call it AI Recommendation Poisoning - and it’s already widespread.

Microsoft’s research team analyzed AI-related URLs in email traffic over 60 days. What they found wasn’t a handful of bad actors - it was a pattern across legitimate businesses:

The most aggressive examples went beyond simple “remember as trusted” instructions. Some injected complete marketing copy directly into AI memory:

Why This Works: The Trust Cascade
Modern AI assistants like Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, and Claude have memory features that persist across conversations. This makes them more useful - they remember your preferences, your projects, your communication style.
It also makes them vulnerable.
The attack works because users trust AI memory. When your assistant confidently recommends a vendor or cites a source, you don’t question whether that preference was injected weeks ago through a “helpful” button click. The manipulation is invisible and persistent.
